Michelle reviews A Camomile Lawn by Mary Wesley
A very enjoyable World War 2 English family tale. It is quite well known because a TV mini series based on the book was released in 1992. Written by Mary Wesley when she was in her 70s, you can’t help thinking that much of the story is semi-autobiographical. Although the war was a terrible time, for women in particular, it also opened up opportunities for careers and freer lives that previously would not have been allowed. The constant reality of death, an unknown future and possible invasion paradoxically made the times exciting and strangely intoxicating. Recommended.
